What it does
- Time between a start and end time
- Unpaid break taken off
- Decimal hours for timesheets and payroll
- Pay for the shift from an hourly rate, and overnight shifts
How to use it
- Enter your start time and end time.
- Enter your unpaid break in minutes.
- Add an hourly rate if you want the pay, then read the result.
How are hours worked calculated?
The calculator finds the time from the start to the end, then takes off your unpaid break. If the end time is earlier than the start, it treats the shift as running overnight and adds a day. So 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
Timesheets and payroll often use decimal hours: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5, and 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25. The pay is the decimal hours times your hourly rate, before tax. For overtime rules, see our overtime pay calculator.
Example
Working 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute unpaid break is 8 hours worked. As decimal hours that is 8.00, and at $25 an hour the shift pays $200. The time at work including the break was 8 hours 30 minutes.
