Good to know

This tool gives general information only and is not medical advice. BMI does not tell the whole story about your health. Speak to a doctor or qualified health professional about your own situation.

What it does

  • Metric (cm, kg) or imperial (inches, pounds)
  • BMI to one decimal place
  • Category: underweight, normal, overweight or obese
  • A healthy weight range for your height

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or imperial.
  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Read your BMI, the category and the healthy range.

What is BMI and what does it tell you?

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared. For most adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is called normal, under 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obese.

BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It does not separate muscle from fat, and it can mislead for athletes, older adults, children and some ethnic groups. Talk to a doctor about your own health.

Example

Someone 175 cm tall who weighs 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9, which is in the normal range. A healthy weight for that height is about 57 to 76 kg.

Questions people ask

Is BMI accurate?
It is a rough guide. It ignores muscle, bone and where fat is carried, so use it only as a starting point.
Does it work for children?
No. Children and teenagers use age and sex based charts. Ask a doctor or nurse.
What are the BMI categories?
Under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 and above obese, for most adults.
