What is net worth and how is it calculated?

Your net worth is the total value of everything you own (assets) minus everything you owe (liabilities). It is one of the clearest measures of your financial health because it shows where you stand today, not just how much you earn.

Net worth = Total assets − Total liabilities

Assets include cash, investments, retirement savings, property, vehicles and valuables. Liabilities include home loans, car loans, credit cards and other debts. Use current market values, and update your figures every few months to track your progress.

Example

Suppose you have 25,000 in cash and investments, 50,000 in property and 10,000 in other assets – total assets 85,000. You owe 30,000 on a home loan and 5,000 on a card – total liabilities 35,000. Your net worth is 85,000 − 35,000 = 50,000 and your debt-to-asset ratio is about 41%.

Frequently asked questions

What is net worth?
Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. A positive number means your assets are greater than your debts.
How do I calculate my net worth?
Add up the current value of all assets, add up all debts, and subtract the debts from the assets. This calculator does it for you as you type.
What is a good net worth?
It depends on your age, income, country and goals. A better question is whether your net worth is growing over time. Track it every few months.
Should I include my home and car?
Yes, use their current market value as assets and include the remaining loan as a liability. Some people also calculate a version without their home to see their liquid wealth.
Is my data stored or shared?
No. All calculations run in your browser. Your numbers are saved only in your own browser storage so they are there when you come back, and you can clear them with one click.
